Tamar Datan
Search and Interim Principal

A seasoned nonprofit executive with decades of leadership experience in a range of mission driven organizations, Tamar was delighted to join the GDSI community of practice in January 2026. Her goal is to help nonprofits of all sizes and capacities meet this moment of mounting uncertainty with a steadfast commitment to capacity building and transformative, restorative change.

She is excited to continue offering tailored executive search services to clients in need of customized support - ranging from behind-the-scenes advice and counsel at key junctures to full-service recruitment from pre-launch discovery to placement and onboarding. In addition to these engagements, Tamar is delighted to expand her practice to include Interim Executive Director services, as well as organizational development and design consulting, executive coaching, and board development.

Prior to GDSI, Tamar served as Senior Advisor at NPAG for more than 10 years, working predominantly in the disability justice, education, philanthropy, and conservation fields, with a focus on advancing economic opportunity, health, access, equity, and innovation.

During the first three decades of her career, Tamar served as program manager, officer, director, Vice President, Executive Vice President, and Executive Director in nonprofits ranging in size and scope, from $6B to pure startup, local to global. In these roles, she was fortunate to be part of exceptional teams at Lesley University, the University of Massachusetts, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy, the Amazon Conservation Team, and TrueSpark. During this time, she also served as a consultant to many other nonprofits, helping craft strategic plans, deepen board engagement, and generate new revenue streams. In addition to diverse day jobs, Tamar has served on 15 nonprofit boards and public service commissions (chairing seven of them) in the areas of education, conservation, economic development, housing, community engagement, and social justice. She currently serves on the boards of All Ages Read Together and Generations for Peace, and as President of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Loudoun.

A native of Jerusalem, Israel, Tamar also spent her childhood in Illinois, West Virginia, and Indiana, before earning a B.A. from Swarthmore College and an M.Ed. from Harvard University. She and her Irish-Palestinian wife split their time between a farm in northern Virginia and a cottage in North Carolina. She loves being out in nature, camping, films, books, animals (dogs especially), kind and passionate people, and doing what she can to make the world a better place.
